Pinch A what?

Today was one of those days that surprised me. I woke up on the uninspired side of the bed, and wondered how I was going to plow through a morning full of activity, including teaching my weekly yoga class at Be The Change. However, I've been in this position many a time before when having to teach, and it forces me to be present and open to the energy exchange between student and teacher. On a day like today, I look to receive energy from my students if possible. And the universe presented me with a lovely, lively group of women this morning. I felt SO good after class, re-energized and inspired. We had so much fun breaking down pincha mayurasana, feathered peacock pose, or more simply, forearm stand. Pinch A what?? I was showing the pose to Morgane and that's what she asked. She's definitely got pinching on the brain lately, and I unfortunately have been on the receiving end of this quite a bit (we're working on it). I told her to call it "pinch a peacock", which I think is a fun blend of Sanskrit and English. Here's me doing my best pinch a peacock under the Big Sky.

  1. Gorgeous photo! Pinchamayarasana (sp?) is my favorite inversion. I called it "pinch a block" for a long time, as my instructor always put a block between my forearms before I kicked up on the wall. Ten years later, I have yet to do it freestanding, but I LOVE it.

    Margaret, yesterday and today were hard for me, and I had no motivation to get it together to teach. You are the third teacher in two days to reassure me that it happens to all instructors AND to remind me that the class participants always comes through with the energy and enthusiasm I might lack at the time. Thank you!

  2. Hi Margaret! So I was so inspired by your photo that I decided to try this pose cold in my kid's playroom. Needless to say, I wound up falling head first onto my son's trainset. Ouch! All 3 of my kids came running to see what happened to mommy and why she said a bad word. I will attempt this again with the wall, I just thought I would share...

  3. I have to say, I always do pincha at the wall, even if I don't ever touch it...and I had someone spot me when I first came up into it before this picture was taken. If you come up away from the wall, put one leg forward and one leg back and that can really help you find your balance before bringing the legs straight up. Falling on the trainset, ouch is right!! hope you're ok.
